STARR

Staff Training Aimed at Reducing Re-Arrest

Probation Officers are trained to assist clients with improving their problem solving skills related to everyday situations.  The goal of STARR is to help clients develop skills to disrupt behaviors and ways of thinking that could lead to future risky or unlawful behavior and to encourage clients to develop decision making skills that lead to beneficial life choices.  The basic concept is that "thinking controls behavior."  This is also known as the Cognitive Model.

Focusing on clients' real life situations and using the Cognitive Model, Probation Officers help identify strategic ways to improve responses or to avoid similar situations in the future.  Clients may be assigned homework and asked to use the worksheets below as tools to help practice the Cognitive Model and improve Problem Solving skills.
